Team USA men's basketball lost to Lithuania on Sunday but advanced to the FIBA World Cup quarterfinals after finishing second in their group.
Lithuania started with nine straight three-pointers and won 110-104. Vaidas Kariniauskas led Lithuania with 15 points.
Mindaugas Kuzminskas scored 14. Tadas Sedekerskis had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
"That was a great basketball game," U.S. coach Steve Kerr told Basket News. Lithuania came out of the gates on fire.
I think they hit nine threes. I love our guys' fightback, hard competition, and terrific run.
"Lithuania trailed the U.S. 31 points in the first quarter. The Americans scored 12.
"They just punched us in the mouth," Kerr said of the opening quarter. They hit every shot. They did it.
I don't think we were ready, but they played a great first quarter and we knew we had to work hard to win."
The loss doesn't affect the U.S.'s gold medal hopes. The Americans play Italy in the knockout round opener. The winner will play Germany and Latvia.
"We'll play again," Timberwolves player Anthony Edwards remarked. "I'm only thinking about the next game."Lithuania is unafraid of America.
