The last NFL preseason game is a team’s final opportunity to have a “dress rehearsal” before the regular season begins. As a result, it’s not uncommon for clubs to give the starters a few snaps just to make sure they’re ready to go for the start of the season. However, it does not appear that the New Orleans Saints will do so with new quarterback Derek Carr.

Dennis Allen, head coach of the New Orleans Saints, said during a recent news conference that Derek Carr will not play in the team’s final preseason game against the Houston Texans on Sunday night.

“Dennis Allen stated on Twitter that Derek Carr will not play this week,” New Orleans Saints beat reporter Nick Underhill wrote.

Given that Carr is new to the organization and is likely still forging chemistry with the offense, the Saints’ decision is somewhat surprising.

Carr appeared in only one preseason game for the Saints this year, going 6-of-8 for 70 yards and a touchdown against the Kansas City Chiefs in the team’s first preseason game. As a result, Carr will only get live reps before the start of the regular season.
